Tents for Haiti
Lead Partners: Give a Kid a Backpack and Clean The World
The Give a Kid a Backpack and Clean the World nonprofit organizations have team up in the relief efforts to Haiti. Many earthquake victims have been displaced and don't have shelter. Give a Kid a Backpack has decided to focus only on temporary housing for the earthquake victims for the upcoming weeks. The goal is to help raise 500 tents , so families have shelter and are not separated. The Give a Kid a Backpack is asking for monetary contributions or gently used and in excellent condition tents to be drop off at 8018 Sunport Drive Suite 206 Orlando, FL. The donation of $35 can help provide a tent to a family.
Companies and individuals interested in donating call (877) 452.7225 or log onto http://giveakidabackpack.org. |
Supplies & Food for Haiti
The local District of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod is working with the LCMS World Relief and Human Care, Mission Haiti, as well as President Marky Kessa of the Evangelical Lutheran Church Haiti (ELCH), and President Revenel Benoit o f the Lutheran Church of Haiti (LCH) to distribute supplies.
Mission Haiti is putting together transportation to get materials to Haiti as quickly as possible. LCMS World Relief and Human Care has committed 200,000 food packs, but it will only scratch the surface. We see the ongoing assistance for Haiti will be necessary over the next 3-6 months or longer.
Drop off locations include Trinity Lutheran Church at 123 E. Livingston Street in downtown Orlando and Prince of Peace Church on Semoran Blvd. |
College Park Resident Marie Rose celebrates her 85th birthday!
College Park resident Marie Rose is a frequent, popular customer at Walgreens on the corner of Edgewater Dr. and Par Ave. Friends and family surprised her with an 85th birthday celebration on Jan. 19 at the store that she enjoys so much for its shopping pleasure with the "best friends in town." Thanks to the folks at Walgreens for giving Marie her 15 minutes of fame! She says it was "the best birthday ever." |

A + Share The Warmth
The recent cold weather, and its impact on students who didn't have the resources to stay warm inspired A+ Tutor U Academic Coaching Academy to be a drop off location for warm clothes for College Park. They mobilized an effort and got all schools and businesses rallying to donate warm clothes for the children.
Because we had such success (for example, one College Park neighbor dropped off 5 bags of coats, hats, and blankets!), we're going to remain open now as a collection spot for goods we'll supply to the people of Haiti. You can donate to the earthquake victims at A+ Tutor U Academic Coaching Academy at 3900 Edgewater Drive. |

JANUARY 2010 NEWS

Each year, Santa can be spotted in College Park at Holiday on the Drive, bringing neighbors and friends together on Edgewater Drive to celebrate the start of the holiday season. Merchants along Edgewater Drive were open for shopping, and the restaurants were packed full for dining throughout the evening. Santa arrived with lights and sirens in the fire truck, making everyone stop and cheer. Children waited eagerly to get their picture taken with Santa. It showed everyone that College Park is a spirit filled community where friends and neighbors love to meet, greet and celebrate together!
Many thanks to everyone who worked on the event, and brought the holiday spirit to College Park.
Many thanks to the Sponsors of Holiday on the Drive:
Amazon Hose and Rubber
Community Paper
Infusion Tea

Regions Bank

Holiday on the Drive is sponsored by the College Park Partnership, an organization dedicated to the promotion of business in College Park. Visit their website at www.OnTheDrive.org

Boy Scout Troop 200 50th Anniversary Celebration!
BSA Troop 200 of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in College Park will celebrate its 50th Anniversary on January 31, 2010. The Troop’s Celebration will be part of the 10:15 AM service, followed by a dinner on the grounds. A committee is trying to contact all past scouts, their families, scout leaders as well as members of the community that have supported the Troop during its first 50 years! We are also looking for old pictures, related memorabilia, that will show the wonderful history of Troop 200.
We would love to have the participation of all generations of Troop 200. Anyone wishing to contact the committee may e-mail the group at bsatroopcelebration@gmail.com
Also, follow Troop 200 on Facebook for further updates. Messages may also be left at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church (407-843-8448).

Can you name any of these young scouts? If so, please e-mail the committee. La-No-Che photo courtesy of George Gafford, former scout leader and father of Eagle scout, Louis Gafford.
College Park Comings & Growings - January 2010
Attending Holiday on the Drive was a great way to spot new businesses in College Park! We found:
Pop City Comics at 2114 Edgewater Drive. Owner Curran Ford was there greeting the excited customers who were happily exploring the comic book selections, Magic cards, sports cards, and action figures. What caught our eye was SPIDERMAN out front, who kept kids wide eyed with awe as he posed with them and gave them candy. They will be holding their grand opening early in January. Call 407-422-4555.
| I Don’t Want To Cook Today. I feel that way EVERY day. But Andrea M. Lukonic has done something about it. That’s the name of her business! She had wonderful appetizers free to everyone to show off her expertise, which was awesome. If YOU don’t want to cook today, call her at 407-920-3610. |
We loved the energy of Elisa DeFoe at Dance Trance, which opened in November at 1828 Edgewater Drive. The merriment of Holiday on the Ddrive extended inside, where dancers were energetically entertaining everyone who ventured in. Dance Trance is a new and exciting way to work out. The classes are full of energy because of the variety and music selections. This doesn’t sound like WORKout to me, it sounds like FUNout. Use the FREE CLASS PASS below (click to print)! Or, call 407-595-0901 for info, or visit their website at www.DanceTranceFitness.com.

Speaking of Comings and Growings, we found Monarcha Marcet coming and going on her GoPet Personal Electric Transportation with a lighted Christmas Tree on the back! She had the most uplifting personality and her sense of humor and Christmas Spirit made many of the attendees grin with pleasure. She certainly made it look easy to scoot around effortlessly. If you want information on the GoPet, call her at 407-843-4696 or see the website at www.GoPetOrlando.com.
