St. Charles Students Live in the 1960s ... Temporarily
Instead of just studying about U.S. life in the 1960s, middle-school students at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School decided to relive it for a short while.
The eighth-grade social studies class taught by Bill Sorice held a 1960s festival to demonstrate their knowledge of 1960s history that included the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War.

On Saturday, April 5, while most Edgewater students were savoring the last days of Spring Break in the Florida sun, EHS Crew boats were competing in the 2008 John Hunter Regatta under the cold, grey skies of Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Lake Silver Elementary School Students Stepping into Charity
 |
Mr. Yuhasz's 5th grade class from Lake Silver Elementary decided to start a shoe drive. Now, you may be wondering why the shoe drive was started. Well, it was not just for fun, or to get out of class. It was to learn team work, to give to others without receiving a reward, and to think about others before yourself.
Already, over 330 of pairs of shoes have been collected. The students have really enjoyed participating in the shoe drive. A special "thank you" goes out to all Lake Silver's wonderful students and families who donated shoes and to Mr. Yuhasz for setting it all up. |

College Park Neighborhood Association's Annual
SUNDAY IN THE PARK - March 16, 2008 was a BLAST!
(click here to see 2008 Sunday in the Park Pictures!)
Sponsored by the College Park Neighborhood Association, SIP was held on Sunday, March 16th in Dartmouth Park. You know, most of us live in College Park because we want the Home Town Atmosphere in which to raise our families. Sunday in the Park is exactly what College Park stands for! People greeted old friends and neighbors! The kids rode the ponies or played on the inflatable attractions!
More than 50 exhibitors were be there to welcome neighbors to sample their food or buy their merchandise. Many exhibitors had valuable information for you for free!
Many thanks to Florida Hospital, title sponsor. They presented the Florida Hospital Pavilion, which offered free screenings – such as blood pressure and body fat analysis – and free chair massages as well as information about the hospital's internationally recognized programs.
On stage, we enjoyed only College Park's best talent... performance groups from our own neighborhood schools showcased their talents, and local musicians kept us entertained. Entertainment included: VFW Band; College Park Baptist Church Choir/Ensemble; Dennis, Jeff & Bari Trio; Lake Silver Elementary Chorus, Edgewater High School Jazz Band; Orlando Youth Theatre; Princeton Elementary Chorus; The Pop Shop; Mr. Richard. College Park's own Pat Duggins had the honorable job of M.C. and signed copies of his new book "Final Countdown: NASA and the End of the Space Shuttle Program."
One of the most Prestigious Awards that anyone can win is College Park's Best Brownies contest! Does that show you that we are a HOME TOWN or what???? I bet they don't have THIS award in New York city! Each year contestants vie for the crown, are judged by the luckiest judges, and then their brownies are put up for sale to the public (proceeds benefit the CPNA). The judges this year were: Orange County Commissioner Bill Segal, Orlando City Commissioner Robert Stuart, Pat Duggins, and President of the College Park Neighborhood Association David Rose. I can tell you, it's probably the best job a person could ask for!
The choice was difficult, there were so many gooey, creamy, nutty, chocolatey brownies to choose from, but the Winner of the Best Brownies In College Park was Jane Water! 1st Runner up was her daughter, Mikki Mathews (shown with judges).
If you are not aware of the College Park Neighborhood Association, the event was an opportunity for you to get to know what they do, how they protect our community, and how to become a part of it.
So many thanks to all the volunteers who care enough about their community to give us all a great Sunday to remember!

IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO GET A FLU SHOT
The Orange County Health Department would like you to know the importance of getting your flu shot and not believing certain myths that might keep you from getting your vaccination and thereby reducing your chance of getting the flu. "A flu shot is the best way to protect yourself, your loved ones, co-workers, and the community from the flu. It is simply not true that the vaccine can give you the flu. Influenza is too serious a disease to believe in a myth. Take it from a doctor, a flu shot is the best way to protect yourself so get your flu shot today if you haven't already. It won't give you the flu," said Dr. Kevin M. Sherin, Director of the Orange County Health Department.
Influenza can lead to pneumonia and can be dangerous for people with heart or breathing conditions. It can cause fever and seizures in children. On average, 226,000 people are hospitalized every year because of influenza and 36,000 die, mostly elderly.
Don't delay in getting your flu vaccine, especially if you are at high-risk. People at risk for complications from the flu are: • All children 6 months – 5 years of age • Anyone 50 years of age or older • Women who are pregnant during flu season • Anyone with long-term health problems (heart, lung, and kidney disease; diabetes; asthma; and anemia) • Anyone with a weakened immune system • Household contacts and caregivers of: children up to age 5, people 50 years and older, and those with medical conditions that put them at risk.
For more information, please contact your family doctor or the Orange County Health Department's Immunization Program at 407-836-2517.
