The dangerous intersection of Edgewater Drive and Shady Lane

SHady LaneA resident of College Park recently had a dangerous encounter at the Edgewater Drive and Shady Lane intersection. He pushed the button to activate the flashing lights to alert drivers he intended to cross Edgewater Drive. As he crossed the street — wearing an orange vest and an orange hat with a white and red light — a four-man OPD motorcycle squad blew right through the intersection. Exasperated by his ordeal, James Underwood wrote an open letter to the city of Orlando’s Traffic and Engineering Department pleading for them to revisit the design of the intersection.

Mr. Underwood shared his letter with the College Park Paper, so we reached out to the city too.

Cassandra Lafser, press secretary for the Office of Mayor, told the CPP that the city is going to “reevaluate the location to see if there are additional improvements that can be made to provide better visibility of the crosswalk.”

Lafser said the Transportation Department is also focusing on education. “We will be reaching out to neighborhood associations and through the City’s social media and communication tools to residents and businesses in the area to provide information on what the law is regarding crosswalks like this and how motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians should use or react to these.”

Though these seem like common sense, here are some pointers for drivers:

  • Stay alert and reduce speed in areas with crosswalks.
  • Stop if pedestrians are crossing or preparing to cross.
  • Wait until pedestrians have crossed entire roadway before resuming travel.

In the meantime, Mr. Underwood — and the rest of the pedestrians of College Park — would appreciate if drivers would slow down just a little and look out for people crossing the street.
