Tweet When I walked into Foundation, The Rolling Stones’ 1971 album “Sticky Fingers” was playing in the background. Peter and Alex Cohen, brothers and owners of the shop, lounged on chairs as they chatted with two customers who were flipping through their newest shipment. “We started to sell records on Instagram to fund the other stuff […]
Saturday, June 17, the Bead Bar celebrated its 25th anniversary. Customers were invited to bring in their first (or favorite) pieces of jewelry made with beads or skills acquired from the Bead Bar. The festivities included cake, champagne and stories.
In 1992, Sonia and Jeff Dameron opened the Bead Bar at 2525 Edgewater Drive, its original College Park location. After working in various areas of the jewelry industry since the 1980s, they had acquired a vast supply of beads, parts and pieces. When the couple decided to liquidate their inventory, they placed a sign — “Beads for Sale” — in the window of their office showroom. People stopped in, bought beads and requested inventory that was not “in stock.”
As entrepreneurs, the Damerons started ordering those “out of stock” items for customers, and the Bead Bar was officially born.
In 1997, the couple moved the store to its current, larger location at 1319 Edgewater Drive where it became known as the original, full-service bead bar in Central Florida.
Today, the Bead Bar offers a variety of quality gemstones and metal beads, such as Bali and Hill Tribe silver and sterling silver. They also offer all the stringing materials and tools to craft anything from a beautiful statement piece to a simple bracelet.
Throughout the year, the Bead Bar hosts trunk shows with vendors who bring, display and sell their special inventories.
In addition to selling bead-related paraphernalia, the Bead Bar offers how-to classes for every level from beginning to advanced jewelry making. Customers can learn basic string and crimping (finishing and attaching a clasp), pearl knotting, wire wrapping, macramé and more.
For those not so hands-on, the Bead Bar also offers a repair service.
Summer hours are Tuesday through Thursday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. To learn more about the Bead Bar and view a full listing of classes, please visit their website: www.beadbar.com.
