Tweet When I walked into Foundation, The Rolling Stones’ 1971 album “Sticky Fingers” was playing in the background. Peter and Alex Cohen, brothers and owners of the shop, lounged on chairs as they chatted with two customers who were flipping through their newest shipment. “We started to sell records on Instagram to fund the other stuff […]
When you think of a printing company building, what comes to mind? Perhaps a darkened location with workers in ink-stained T-shirts operating loud machines with an oily, mechanical smell hanging in the air? When you walk into the College Park Printing Company, that is most certainly NOT the atmosphere. Their office is bright and modern-looking with high tech machines placed throughout the space.
Steve Abear, principal partner of College Park Printing, has been in the industry for over thirty years. He spent a good chunk of that time working for an Orlando-based, family-owned printing business, which the owners sold to a national company in 2012.
Abear went to work for the new company, but his stint did not last long. The corporate climate with an emphasis on producing sales while not taking care of the customer went against Abear’s better professional sense. So, he left and started College Park Printing Company in April 2013.
“Our business is relationship-driven,” said Abear. “We take care of our customers,” selling the usual selection of products including business cards, flyers and brochures. New customers will come in and order something small, like business cards, but when those customers feel taken care of and see the quality of the work, they then return for orders of greater scope and quantity.
Abear differentiated College Park Printing from less personally directed competition by pointing out their customer service and the fact they employ a full-time graphic artist.
And Abear referred to the small-town feel as something he loves about owning a business in College Park, where he enjoys building relationships with his customers. “College Park is its own little town,” he said, repeating a refrain many of us who reside here know.
