LAKE SILVER ELEMENTARY NEWS
Thank You College Park Community for a Wonderful Teach-In
On November 15, Lake Silver Elementary had its annual Teach-In Day. This was a remarkable day where members of the local community came into the school to share their knowledge and experiences with students. Also, each grade level had a chance to encounter a guest speaker that intertwined with their grade level Math Magnet theme.
Kindergarten was joined by Billy Waldron, from American Pie Pizza Company on Edgewater Drive. He assisted their “Kindergarten Cuisine” theme by sharing his delicious pizza making capabilities. He was able to demonstrate to them how he measures out ingredients and toppings to create the perfect pizza no matter if you order a small, medium, or large. Finishing off the visit, the kindergartners were treated to a hot slice of American Pie Pizza.

First Grade was joined by two special guests; Ms. Rosenblum from the local library and Mr. Keller, an engineer, to discuss different types of buildings. Since the students study “Building and Design” with their magnet theme, they had a Lego Design contest at the close of their presentation. Students came up with many creative ideas to compliment their Teach-In day.

Local firefighters made their way into second grade classrooms to help with their “Math in the Community” theme. Classes were treated to a talk from real life firefighters and then a trip out to see the fire engine and walk through all the equipment used.

Third grade students, who work with “Banking and Economics” by running a school garden were greeted by Mr. Chowrimootoo, from Initial Tropical Plants. He was able to discuss how his thriving vegetation business relates to the students and the gardening that they do.

Since the Fourth Grade students study “Travel Time and Tourism in Florida,” they received the opportunity to have a visitor from the Gaylord Palms Resort. They were exposed to the wonderful world of tourism that makes up much of the Central Florida community. Students also got an opportunity to view slides of the hotel and see what a convention center does to attract more businesses to their location.

Fifth grade students, busily preparing for their Biz Kid$ store experience December 4-15th, in the Fashion Square Mall, were treated to Ms. Braswell, a marketing guest speaker. Students learned how companies use different marketing techniques, like free samples, to entice consumers.

In addition to the grade level presentations, students were also able to experience a demonstration from Martial Arts World during their P.E. times and a guest reader from the Orlando Magic Company in an exceptional education class. Instructor Roberts, from MAW did a wonderful job incorporating physical fitness as well as discipline and respect into his presentation.

Lake Silver Elementary is proud to have such wonderful neighborhood support for their achieving students.
