LAKE SILVER ELEMENTARY NEWS
Lake Silver Math Magnet News
Our school Math Magnet program continues to grow and prosper. Every grade level is doing some fantastic activities to help support their particular theme. To see some projects we’ve done, check out our Magnet Website at http://teachers.ocps.net/hollrav.
This October, many events are occurring. The 2nd grade will be visiting Publix, College Park, to learn more about their community stores and math. To support marketing and advertising, 5th grade will be going on a field trip to Metropolis Advertising on Smith Street. Also 3rd grade has had a guest speaker from Apenberry’s to talk about growing healthy gardens and will be visiting Harry P. Leu Gardens soon to see how a local landmark garden survives as a business. Our 4th graders continue to incorporate Florida maps into their every day learning to see how our great state is loaded with wonderful sites to travel to. They were also able to hear a presentation from the History Center on early Florida pioneer travel.
The learning excitement also continues well into November. Our first graders are headed to Lego Land to see some exciting 3D structures. Also, Washington Mutual will be coming out to speak on “Banking for a Business” with our 5th graders, who are running the school store, Tiger Express. The Tiger Express is also helping 5th grade earn money for their upcoming Biz Kids experience in December at the Fashion Square Mall. Kindergarten is carrying their cuisine theme through, by whipping up a tasty treat every Friday that matches whatever letter they are studying.
Our 3rd grade garden is also blossoming quite nicely here at Lake Silver. Our students, with the help of the 3rd grade teachers and Pat Bush, have planted corn, eggplant, squash, sunflowers, beans, pumpkins, and tomatoes. By the third week of October, the beans, eggplant and squash will be available. Corn will be the next plant harvested, hopefully by mid November. Baring any frosts or freezes, the tomatoes will be ready in December and continue throughout the winter.
Our Magnet program is always looking for wonderful parent and community help as well. Please continue to think of us if you have a business or contact that you feel would fit in with our themes. Also, our garden would love any leftover bales of hay you may have used in your Halloween or Thanksgiving displays. Please feel free to contact Vicki Daley, Math Resource Teacher at 407-245-1850 x519 or e-mail her at hollrav@ocps.net.
