LAKE SILVER ELEMENTARY NEWS
Lake Silver Math Magnet Program Brings Math to Life
Lake Silver Elementary is continuing to bring some wonderful real life applications into their everyday classroom. The school has been able to bring in some terrific guest speakers to show the students just how common math is in our community, and provide interesting lessons and experiences to guide student's learning.
On Friday, September 8th, to help promote their theme of "Community", the 2nd graders were visited by Carolyn Rosenblum from the Orange County Public Library system. Mrs. Rosenblum was able to speak with each class and tell them how numbers work together with our library to make it a useful community place. Some examples were how many books get checked out in an average day, and how it takes just a few minutes to calculate how many books are in an entire library.

The students were also treated to a quilting presentation by Beth Rohrer, a former principal and avid quilter, on September 12th. This presentation allowed the 1st graders to see how patterns and designs work together to create beautiful and useful items.
Some upcoming events scheduled are a cooking presentation to the Lake Silver Kindergarten students from Dubsdread Catering, a visit to Metropolis Advertising Agency for our 5th graders, and a Leu Gardens experience for 3rd grade.
Lake Silver 3rd Graders Remember 9/11
On Monday, September 11th, the 3rd grade team at Lake Silver Elementary School participated in a memorial ceremony to honor those who lost their lives five years ago. The 3rd grade teachers-Mrs. Brennan, Mrs. Richardson, Ms. Neubauer, Mrs. Boyd, and Ms. Espinal-assisted the students with many meaningful activities to commemorate this somber occasion.
Beginning with the Pledge of Allegiance and the Star Spangled Banner, the students in grade three came together for the 2:00 P.M. ceremony with poems, speeches, and posters to share. The themes covered in each class were: We Honor; We Remember; We Cherish; We Mourn; We Unite. The children designed a mural related to their class' theme and shared this during the ceremony. At the end of the ceremony, one student chose a few slips of paper from a black vase that held everyone's "Good Deed" pledges and read them aloud. Balloons with messages of hope were released skyward, and the students enjoyed a red, white and blue popsicle to remind them of the importance of patriotism.
It is our hope that the boys and girls, who participated in this commemorative event to honor the brave men and women, who lost their lives so tragically, will forever remember this reverent occasion.
To help make all these activities and future projects possible, Lake Silver is asking for help from local businesses and the community. If you would like to have the students participate with your company, or would like to sponsor an already planned activity, please feel free to contact, Vicki Daley, Math Resource Teacher at 407-245-1850 x286 or e-mail her at hollrav@ocps.net.
