MARCH 2008
Watch Our Senses Grow!
The sensory garden at Lake Silver Elementary is growing and growing! The third grade Gifted students have weeded, planted, fertilized, and even tasted some of the fifteen different types of plants, all with different sensory qualities, that are growing in our garden. The students also have a garden in a wagon where strawberries are growing. They will take the wagon to the ESE classes and teach those students about the plants. The Gifted students are also working on pictures and labels for the gardens so visitors will be able to identify the plants and their specific sensory qualities. The gardens have been funded through the Darden grant and the OCPS Service Learning Mini-Grant.

In class, the students are reading The Secret Garden, learning about the plants mentioned in the book, connecting literature with math and science, and practicing team building.

In the main garden, we have just completed winter planting for the spring harvest in a few months. Currently it’s filled with carrots, cabbage, onions and broccoli with cilantro, various poppies, alyssum, lobelia and larkspurs along the border. The beautiful blossoms are expected in April and May.

Beginning to bloom now are sugar snap peas that should be set for picking in just a few short weeks. Also ready for harvest are several types and colors of eye-catching lettuce. Once it’s all been gathered, it will make room for the seeding of sunflowers to be available by mid-April.

Helping support our school gardens is a $250.00 mini-grant received by Math Resource Teacher, Vicki Daley, from the Florida Farm Bureau to go towards the overall upkeep and maintenance of the gardens. It will be used to purchase seeds, plants, and fertilizer.

Thank You to Our Retired Crossing Guard, Mr. Harry Rose
Harry Rose.
Lake Silver Elementary Principal, Cindy Dodge, was proud to honor retiring crossing guard, Harry Rose. Mr. Rose had been the crossing guard for LSE for eight wonderful years. He was thanked with handmade cards from students, and also given a gift card to Publix. He was known as an interesting and wonderful man as well as a World War II veteran. His wife, Geraldine, was also a school crossing guard in the area as well as for Killarney Elementary. Mr. Rose is retiring on doctor’s orders, and will be greatly missed. Thank you for your kindness and safe keeping of our school.

Project Imagination Visits Lake Silver

On Friday, February 1st the imagination of the students at Lake Silver Elementary ran wild! That’s the day that Project Imagination began at the school! All students listened to several stories told by storyteller Mitchell O’Rear. Project Imagination introduces the art of storytelling to the students. Workshops are then held with classes six weeks at a time. During the workshops, students listen to stories and then use their imaginations to create their own tales. The seeds of creativity are certainly being sown at Lake Silver! A special thank you goes to the Dr. Phillips Foundation and the Siemens Corporation. Their funding, along with support from the Lifelong Learning Institute at the Winter Park Public Library, makes this program possible.

February 2008
The Lake Silver fifth grade school store is open for business! The math magnet theme of marketing and production has taken over Room 7 in the form of ‘Tiger Express’! The school store is fully operational and is open to all Lake Silver students three days a week. The fifth grade students used their marketing and financial skills to decide upon six store sections to stock with appealing merchandise. Prices range from $0.10 up to $1.50 and everywhere in between. There is something available for every budget. The following store sections offered are:
“Tiger Depot” - school supplies
“Snack Shack”- healthy snacks
“Garden Fresh”- fresh vegetables and flowers from the school gardens
“Books-R-Us”- paper back books for all grade levels
“Cards a Million” - seasonal items to celebrate the various holidays
“Tiger Fun” – trinkets and toys

Students have the opportunity to be greeters, work the register, and keep inventory of items that are sold.
