The Amethyst is probably the most valuable member of the Quartz family. Its name is derived from a Greek word meaning “not to intoxicate.” An ancient Greek myth tells how the god Bacchus (the god of wine), poured grape juice over a petrified maiden giving her the lovely purple color. It was also believed that wine drunk from an amethystine cup would prevent the drinker from losing his wits at banquets or drinking bouts. There are many other legendary stories associated with Amethyst.
It was thought to quicken the intelligence and make the owner shrewd in business; to protect the soldier and give him victory; to aid hunters; protect against contagious diseases and control evil thoughts. Some of the collection from Catherine the Great are still in the Soviet Treasury.
Amethyst is located in several countries that include Russia, South Africa, United States, Brazil, Japan, Mexico and Iran. With the colors ranging from light violet to a deep purple, jewelers have a range of pricing and designs to offer the consumer for any occasion. With all the stories behind the stone, no wonder it is the most cherished of the colored gemstones.
