The mineral Beryl includes the most important gemstones. Aquamarine;
Emerald and Morganite are exceptionally attractive stones. In its pure form beryl is colorless; different varieties are colored by the presence of minute amounts of metallic oxides. Aquamarine alternates with bloodstone as the birthstone for March. Its blue to greenish-blue color has long been considered to be a symbol of happiness and everlasting youth. Its name comes from the Latin word meaning “sea water”. In the Middle Ages, it was supposed to give the wearer insight and foresight. It was also thought to induce sleep. If a person held an aquamarine in his mouth, it was said that he could call a devil from hell and received answers to any questions he might ask. Water in which an aquamarine had been soaked was believed to cure eye troubles, stoppage of breath and hiccups.
Huge aquamarines have been found. Such as a crystal from Brazil in 1920 that weighed 243 pounds and was 19 inches long and 16 inches wide. Aquamarines have been found in Brazil, Argentine, Afghanistan, Africa, India, Madagascar and the United States. The price of fine medium and medium-dark stones has increased greatly in recent years, as these much desired tones in flawless quality are quite rare. Lighter tones are obtained more easily in almost any size.
