From the Desk of City Commissioner Robert Stuart
Dear College Park Neighbor,
As we begin the fall season here in our College Park community, I wanted to share some updates from City Hall and remind you of some great events that are happening in College Park and around the area.
As I write this update, the tropics remain lively. As we enter into the most active part of hurricane season, please continue to be diligent in your efforts to stay prepared and stay informed. With that in mind, please know that you can receive emergency information during an event through the City’s emergency information line, 407-246-4268, the City’s emergency radio station, AM 1650 or the City’s website, www.cityoforlando.net/emergency.
In our older neighborhoods, like College Park, we have seen some leaking of surface groundwater into our city’s sewage system. We are currently stepping up the evaluation of our entire system to work hard to prevent this from occurring, however, this may still cause a backup at your home or in your neighborhood during heavy precipitation. For emergency response relating to stormwater and wastewater issues, please call 407-246-2213 any time, day or night.
Please check out a more comprehensive hurricane tip sheet created by our Public Works Department on my webpage, http://www.cityoforlando.net/elected/council/stuart.htm
Other important government numbers to keep handy would be the Traffic Maintenance Hotline, 321-235-5360, which deals with traffic signal issues, downed traffic signs, potholes, etc., the Traffic Hotline, 407-246-2906, Code Enforcement, 407-246-4444, Orange County Animal Control, 407-836-3111 and the OUC Emergency number, 407-832-9150.
The City also continues to move forward with our Community Venues process. At the end of August, the design for the performing arts center was disclosed to the City and the public. If you didn’t get a chance to attend the unveiling, you can see the renderings, floor plans, and more at www.orlandopac.org. And in mid-September, the City held the grand opening of the Community Venues Blueprint Employment Office in order to provide residents a central location to find information about working on the Community Venues. The office is located at 1200 West South Street. Also, you can find information about all of the venues at www.cityoforlando.net/venues, including the events center webcam that shows live pictures of the events center site as construction begins to take place.
Also, if you have been following the re-development of Edgewater Drive, please note that the Municipal Planning Board Hearing for the southeast corner of Smith Street and Edgewater Drive has been deferred to October 21st meeting. It will take place beginning at 8:30 a.m. here at City Hall. For more information, check out the City Planning Department’s webpage, www.cityoforlando.net/planning.
Speaking of Halloween, please check out my district 3 website at www.cityoforlando.net/district3 for some tips from our Orlando Police Department on how you can stay safe this trick-or-treating season.
Also, please support our College Park businesses by attending College Park JazzFest on November 8th at 6 p.m. at Albert Park. For more information, visit their website, www.downtowncollegepark.com.
And finally, if you are part of a community group that might want to participate in the City’s 2008 Veterans Day Parade taking place on November 8th, applications are due by October 10th. For an application or for more information, check out the City’s website or call 407-246-3720.
Once again, thank you for your support. Our city is already a Great City because of the involvement of our citizens. Thanks for taking the time to do your part in helping keep our community safe and Happy Halloween to you and your family.
Robert
