From the Desk of City Commissioner Robert Stuart

It's been a very busy time since the Runoff Election on April 11. I've have the privilege to spend time with our Mayor, Orlando's Senior Management Team, and many of our citizens. The expressions of goodwill and encouragement have been overwhelming. I'm excited about what we can accomplish together and about District 3 growing together as a community.

Since I will not take the Oath of Office until June 1, this article will include just a few thoughts on my first few months as I take on the responsibilities as your new City Commissioner. There will be much to do in a short time.

First, let me express my personal appreciation for the service of Commissioner Vicki Vargo. She has served our city and the citizens of District 3 for almost six years and her contributions are noteworthy. As I have mentioned before, I look forward to working with her as we conclude this transition time.

Second, there are some key initiatives that I would like to begin as part of the initial direction of my service as your City Commissioner. In August, I have asked Mayor Dyer, Lt. Governor Toni Jennings, Senators Mel Martinez and Bill Nelson, along with a host of local elected officials to join the leadership of District 3 in our first District Leadership Workshop. Our goal is simple; create a great community while we understand the interdependent roles of government (local, state, and federal). Please look for more details during the summer.

Third, there ware several key initiatives that have already been outlined by Mayor Dyer. The $2 per day surcharge on rental cars to help with our ever increasing transportation costs; the Transportation Impact Fee increase on new construction to help bring Orlando in balance with Orange County and surrounding municipalities; the need for new Community Venues and our challenge to fund them…all of these will be approaching quickly and we will make key decisions for Orlando's future in my first 90 days!

Last, during the first few months, we will look toward a new and better way to communicate the needs of our citizens. Look for the creation of our first E-newsletter for District 3, a District-wide common calendar, and for regular involvement with this commissioner and our local neighborhood groups. On June 5, I will be sharing some of these thoughts at the monthly meeting of the College Park Neighborhood Association and look forward to your involvement.

I am asking for your input and for your help as we work toward a great future. Thank you for your vote of confidence…I'm looking forward to serving you. Following June 1, you can contact me at City Hall through my phone (407-246-2003) or e-mail (Robert.Stuart@CityofOrlando.net).

Robert F. Stuart, City Commissioner, City of Orlando, District 3
