From the Desk of City Commissioner Robert Stuart

The month of July brought many exciting events to the City of Orlando. Thanks to all those citizens who took in our annual 4th of July, Fireworks at the Fountain event. It was a great evening and a great display of patriotism… and no rain to put a damper on the festivities!

And it is great to report that Historic Dubsdread Golf Course is officially re-open! Thanks to Susan Titour and the College Park Community Paper for attending the grand opening ceremony. It was truly a great day—one that celebrated the rich 85-year history of the course, while looking toward the future of this wonderful City amenity. For me, even though my wife and I took many bike tours around the course throughout the renovation process, it really wasn’t until opening day that I truly appreciated the remarkable transformation that took place. Please visit this historic jewel if you haven’t done so recently. Even if you aren’t a golfer, you’ll appreciate the lush landscaping and the beauty of the area right in the middle of our beautiful College Park community. If you are a golfer and need more information about setting up a tee time or learning more about membership options, please check out www.dubsdreadgolf.com.

With their data collection process completed, the Edgewater Drive Task Force took some time to deliberate over all of the information that was gathered during the past months and came back together on July 17th to begin outlining the recommendations that will be included in their final report. The plan will include specific directives within categories such as urban form, parking and transportation, architectural details and pedestrian friendliness. Look for updates on upcoming meetings as well as the status of the final report on the City’s Edgewater Drive Vision Task Force webpage located at www.cityoforlando.net/planning.

August brings to the City of Orlando the 25th Annual National Night Out (NNO) taking place on August 5, 2008. National Night Out is a unique crime/drug prevention program where involved citizens join the Orlando Police Department in taking a stand against crime by holding community events throughout the City. Many events will be taking place in College Park, so please consider getting involved. For more information, please visit the website, www.cityoforlando.net/police or call our Neighborhood Watch Division at 407-246-2369.

As always, thanks for your continued support of our wonderful neighborhoods and our Great City. I look forward to seeing you August 5th at a National Night Out event near you!
