St. Charles Students Live in the 1960s ... Temporarily

Instead of just studying about U.S. life in the 1960s, middle-school students at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School decided to relive it for a short while.

The eighth-grade social studies class taught by Bill Sorice held a 1960s festival to demonstrate their knowledge of 1960s history that included the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War.

Students worked in groups to produce tri-board presentations on various topics that ranged from the My Lai Massacre in Vietnam to the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969.

Students also reported on the Pentagon Papers, the John F. Kennedy administration and the president's assassination, the Cold War, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Bay of Pigs Invasion.

"Some students wore costumes, and some brought in display items," Sorice said. "The festival itself involved music, incense and a PowerPoint presentation showing many famous images from the 1960s."

St. Charles Celebrates Catholic Schools Week

A grandparents' tea, career day, an open house, a spirited kickball tournament and pep rally capped a whirl of activities as St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School observed national Catholics Schools Week.

The pre-K to 8th-grade school started the week's activities with a Jan. 27 open house for more than 50 prospective families, who were greeted by enthusiastic parent ambassadors, school staff, cheerleaders and a fifth-grade chorus.
The opening ceremony Jan. 28 was directed by members of the school's chapter of the National Junior Honor Society, followed by a grandparents' tea and tour of the College Park school's campus.

"The smiles on the grandparents' faces lit up the church and Bishop Grady Hall,” said Principal Mary Agnew. "It was great fun!”

Prospective and current families had a chance to visit classrooms for a curriculum open house and learn more about what the school offers.

During career day, a pastry chef, a surgeon and a SWAT team member were among more than 50 parents and guests who shared with students what their jobs were like. Preschool through fourth-grade students dressed as what they would like to be when they grow up, while fifth- through eighth-grade students wore "twins” outfits.
On the following day, students and teachers donned their favorite college sports apparel during a daylong kickball tournament that pitted class against class in good-natured fun.

Parents also had the opportunity to share lunch with their children during a family picnic, and students dressed in the school's red-and-black Bulldogs colors for a spirited pep rally.

The 34th annual Catholic Schools Week is sponsored by the National Catholic Educational Association and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. It is an annual national celebration of the important role that Catholic elementary and secondary schools across the country play in providing a values-added education for America's young people. Catholic schools are proud of their educational network that emphasizes intellectual, spiritual, moral, physical and social values in their students.

St. Charles Winds Up Winter Sports, Looks to Spring

Elena Gierok, Dawna Celenza and Meredith Lilley charge into a lacrosse game sponsored by the Catholic Youth League.
St. Charles Borromeo's middle-school athletic teams are winding up winter sports in girls junior varsity and varsity soccer and boys JJV, JV and varsity basketball.

The girls JV soccer team is the defending champion in the Catholic Middle School Athletic Conference (CMAC), which consists of 12 Catholic schools in the greater Orlando area.
Meanwhile, St. Charles girls competed in lacrosse in the Catholic Youth League (CYL), while boys played flag football in December and January. CYL is a non-profit, volunteer organization that promotes sports for children in Central Florida Catholic schools.

St. Charles middle-school teams finished the girls and boys track season with a Dec. 8 league championship meet and looked back to successful fall season in boys varsity and JV soccer competition and girls JJV, JV and varsity basketball.

The boys' JV soccer team won the CMAC championship in finals held Oct. 17 at Bishop Moore Stadium, finishing the year with an undefeated regular season (8-0). The girls varsity basketball team finished the regular season with an 8-0 record.

St. Charles students are looking forward to competition in the girls and boys volleyball teams this spring.

Gleaming Computer Lab Brings Smiles to All

A state-of-the-art computer lab has given St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School students the chance to soar to new heights in technology as they learn to how to conduct Internet research, develop eye-catching presentations and create digital art and music.

A classroom now is outfitted with rows of gleaming Apple iMac computers with dual-core Intel processors, 17-inch monitors and CD/DVD players. The teacher's iMac is little more powerful in order to monitor all of the student computers and control the programs being used. The lab now allows every child and the teacher to have their own computer during class.

A projector enables the teacher to demonstrate new programs and techniques in regular K-8 computer classes. Other St. Charles teachers have used the lab for demonstrations of core academic material, said Joe Potter, who instructs computer classes at the school.

"We teach the full office suite of programs such as word processing, spreadsheets, electronic presentations and database creation," Potter said. "We can also do online research using the Internet on any topic that we need; we even have an account to use the school edition of Britannica online, as well as other resources.

"We also can teach digital image manipulation, digital art, video editing, podcast creation, music creation, and a host of other tasks that might be called electronic communications."

Once an Apple OS X server is in service, the school will be able to use the Mac lab to demonstrate network navigation, Potter said.

"It will also facilitate software management and promote good organizational habits on the part of the students," he said.

St. Charles Kindergartners Take "A Walk Back In Time"

How better to learn history than to experience it firsthand? During "A Walk Back in Time," St. Charles kindergarteners had the opportunity to use a washboard, beat rugs and write on slates to find out how Indian and Pilgrim children lived many years ago.

"The classes step back in time to recreate activities that the Indian and Pilgrim children engaged in," said Susie Glascock, a kindergarten teacher at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School, located at 4005 Edgewater Dr.

"The activities are the reward for the lessons that precede it," she said. "For example, we used washboards and rug beaters and participated in log throwing, vegetable digging, corn shucking, beading and tic-tac-toe with sea shells, and writing on slates."

The event represents the first Thanksgiving and the hard work that went into settling the New World. A Walk Back in Time also helps to celebrate the importance of freedom of religion, Mrs. Glascock explained.

Parents helped with the food and activities, and the children wore costumes that they had made. Later they feasted on snacks like popcorn, corn and blueberry muffins, cheese, grapes, apple cider and apple wedges.

January 2008

College Park residents once again enjoyed family fun at the annual St. Charles Borromeo Fall Festival.
All in all, the lakeside event was a great place to relax and catch up with friends and family. Kids spent hours on inflatable rides, bungee jumping and rock-climbing walls, while adults sampled a variety of ethnic foods and shopped at craft booths. Boardwalk-type games of chance were a hit with all generations.

Music was in the air as bands and singing groups took to the stage, while a book fair at the library provided festival-goers with a welcome chance to browse for reading pleasure and Christmas gifts. Sports fans watched big-screen TVs in the beer garden as they cheered their favorite football teams to victory Saturday night.

Don't miss the fun next year! Bring family and friends to College Park's biggest and best family festival at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School, located at 4005 Edgewater Drive, Orlando.

ST. CHARLES MURAL DEDICATION

When he was 17, Peter Pasha gazed at a convent chapel wall that would become the site of the largest art project that the high school student ever had attempted — a life-size mural of Joseph's calling by God — and believed he could be worthy of the task.
It turned out that he was.

Thirty years later as an experienced artist, Pasha embarked a second time on the same project. This time his job was to replace the mural at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School, and in so doing, he found himself making connections between the past and present and a life's journey that sometimes does turn full circle.

At the conclusion of Catholic Schools Week, a ceremony dedicated the new mural, which depicts the contributions of the school's 16th-century patron saint to Catholic education. The Rev. Thomas Barrett, pastor of the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Community presided.

"Our school slogan is derived by St. Charles Borromeo: 'Cultivating the Mind and the Spirit' and that is what we have been doing successfully for over 50 years," said Jennifer Garrison, a representative of the school. "However, our motto is, 'Work Hard, Pray Hard, Play Hard!' The playground and mural are a testament of that. We expect our students to work hard in the classroom but realize the importance of balance in their lives. On their way to the playground they are reminded by the mural of the mission of St. Charles Borromeo and the importance of the importance of education throughout history. The playground serves as a reward for their hard work as well as a vehicle of fun physical activity. Allowing the students the opportunity of this physical exertion enhances their learning in the classroom. Both the mural and the playground are results of prayer and the response of the faithful."

After several sketches of ideas were passed up the line, the Calling of St. Joseph was chosen as the theme. With the assistance of a friend, Gerard Wicklin (also of the BMHS Class of 1976), Pasha began the under-drawing on the wall during the Christmas break in 1975. A local Porter Paint store contributed materials to the effort, and the painting was completed in the spring of 1976.

By the fall of 2005, Pasha said he thought the mural was in need of updating. The former convent building again had changed hands — this time as library and classroom space for St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School. Pasha volunteered to paint a new mural on the chapel wall, and St. Charles principal Mary Agnew and her husband Jim graciously donated the paint and materials for the new mural.

"I wanted to picture the patron saint's strength and guidance in Catholic education both in his time on earth and in our present time," he said. "The saint is surrounded by grade school children of the 16th century and our modern century. My two sons, Conor and Ryan, are portrayed to the immediate left of St. Charles.

For more information, please contact Carol Saunders at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School 407.293.7691, ext. 245.

Peter Pasha, artist, illustrator and teacher, lives in Winter Park, Fla. with his wife Kathy and his two sons, Conor and Ryan. He is a graduate of 12 years of Catholic education in three states and graduated with a BFA in art and graphic design from the University of Florida (1980). Professionally he divides his time between teaching, free-lance commercial art and fine art.

BISHOP MOORE GIRLS SOCCER TEAM

Bishop Moore Girls Soccer Team May 2007
When the Bishop Moore girls soccer team won the Class 4A State Championship in February 2007, it was a particularly sweet reunion and victory for seven of the 11 players -- all graduates of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School.

The seven players -- Jessica Deese, Melissa Biber, Lauren Sanchez, Sandy Durfee, Deanna Dempsey, Mallory Meads and Lauren Reen -- last played together four years ago when St. Charles lost in the CMAC (Catholic Middle School Athletic Conference) championship game.
For most of the Final Four tournament games, the majority of the 11 players that Bishop Moore fielded were the St. Charles grads.

"So this year it was sweet to see all seven on the field together during the final minutes of their high school state championship," said Tom Reen, father of Lauren Reen, who was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

Lauren and another St. Charles grad, Jessica Deese, were also team captains and were named first team All-Orange County and All-State. Jessica also was named Orange County Player of the Year.

"The entire St. Charles school community can take pride in this achievement," Tom Reen said. "Each of these girls played for and learned from great coaches at St. Charles in Vic Uvalle, Peter Tresnan and Joe Biber, but they also learned valuable lessons from all of their teachers, staff and all of the other people, such as the Athletic Association, who make St. Charles such a special place."

The fact that all seven players were together in that final game is even more remarkable considering that Mallory Meads had started high school at Winter Park, moved with her family to Las Vegas more than a year ago and returned to Orlando in the fall of 2006, this time attending Bishop Moore Catholic High School. Mallory scored one of the goals in a semi-final game that Bishop Moore won 2-0.

Bishop Moore's Lady Hornets won the Class 4A State Championship on Feb. 10 in Fort Lauderdale in a fierce 2-1 victory over Gulf Breeze. The team ended the season with a17-7-3 record as they captured the school's fifth state championship and its first since 1998.

Amanda Wallace
Former Bishop Moore High School soccer standout and Winter Park resident Amanda Wallace played a key role in the University of North Florida’s championship run in last week KELME Port City Classic in Mobile, AL.

Wallace, a 19-year-old sophomore midfielder for the Lady Ospreys, scored one goal and assisted on another as UNF trounced Nicholls State, 5-0, in the title game and improved its season record to 4-1.

Behind a balanced attack, Wallace helped stake the Lady Ospreys to what would be an overwhelming 2-0 lead by assisting Lena Mullaney at the 24:29 mark for the game’s second goal and scoring an unassisted goal moments later.

UNF relied on a stout defense to stifle Nicholls State throughout, limiting the team to only one shot on goal – and that in the final minute of the game.

The Lady Ospreys dominated the all-tournament team, placing four players on the squad, including Wallace, tournament offensive MVP Katelin Swift, Jessica Eriksen and Elizabeth Gowan.

St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School Cheerleaders Perform at the Orange Bowl

Armed with their faith and a strong determination to win, the fifth through eighth grade classes of St. Charles girls cheerleading practiced hard for four weeks before sending their audition tape to the Orange Bowl Halftime Committee. Their hard work paid off when they were chosen among 750 other young ladies. "This was a great opportunity. I promised the 8th grade girls when they were in 6th grade that I would take them to a competition. I never dreamed it would be one so extraordinary" said Mrs. Kelly Avery, Cheerleading Coach.

They left for Miami on January 1st and returned January 5th. "This was the most exciting event for me. The Orange Bowl experience of performing on TV as well as in front of thousands of people in the stands was awesome. I felt anxious, nervous and excited all at the same time. This experience is one I will never forget," said Sara Tomlinson, cheerleader.

The girls had to practice every day before the event for several hours at a time. "It was tough, but that is what makes this team stand out above the rest. They have teamwork and determination. I was proud to represent my school at the Orange Bowl. It was also great to dance with all of the performers. It was a once in a lifetime experience for all of us." explained Kayla Forester, cheerleader.
