Controversial Headline in July Community Paper Offends A Few, Delights Many...
After publishing Community Paper for 19 years, I would think that my readers could trust me that everything I print is GOOD NEWS. That is the premise of the newspaper - to only bring good news about College Park.
Consequently, when some readers saw the July, 2008 headline, "COLLEGE PARK WOMAN WAS IN PRISON FOR 48 YEARS!" some people didn't even read the article, they just thought it was a negative story and objected.
TRUST ME, PEOPLE! You should have known the article would be GOOD news. What could be so wrong about a letter from the publisher exclaiming the good news that she was able to quit smoking after 48 years?????
See what the big deal was - by Susan Titour, Publisher, Community Paper. ~more |
In other July news:
Congratulations to Debbie Goetz, who is now a Licensed Real Estate BROKER! Debbie is with Derenthal Realty Group, which is located at 1520 Edgewater Drive, Suite E, phone 407-257-5924. See Debbie’s website at www.DebbieGoetzRESULTS.com.
You may remember it as the Honda dealer, or Z Art Gallery, but the property at 1802 Edgewater Drive is now an empty lot awaiting its new purpose - soon it will be CNL Bank! Construction is expected to begin 6-8 weeks from now.

College Park Video Closing July 1, 2008 - After 23 years of serving College Park, College Park Video will be closing its doors on July 1st. Contrary to the article in the Orlando Sentinel on May 14th, the family owned video store is NOT closing due to economic reasons. The building where College Park Video has its lease is owned by the Demetree family, and the corporation has given all the tenants in the building their “end of lease” notice. Demetree’s plans for the building are unknown at this time, but the vacating of the building will also close the doors of Planet Smoothie, Rosa’s Alterations, and the Brother’s Keeper Thrift Store that feeds the hungry and helps the needy. ~ more

College Parkian's Participated in Ride Your Bicycle to Work Day

City Commissioner Robert Stuart and Mayor Buddy Dyer and Orlando residents headed to work motor-free on May 16th, as the City of Orlando celebrated the almost 230 miles of bikeways and bike lanes by participating in National Bike Month with the Mayor’s proclamation of May 16 as "Bike to Work Day." As part of this event, Starbucks partnered with the City and offered free coffee at ALL Orlando area Starbucks locations to anyone who commuted by bicycle and brought a mug on Bike To Work Day. Designated a Bicycle Friendly Community since 2000, Orlando promotes bicycling as a form of transportation by incorporating complete streets policies to make roads safe and accessible to all users; giving away locks, lights, helmets and reconditioned bikes; starting the Pedal for Pride bike ride with the Parramore Kidz Zone and working directly with the Orlando Police Department to provide education, safety training and enforcement for bicycling.

SUNDAY IN THE PARK - March 16, 2008 was a BLAST!
(click here to see 2008 Sunday in the Park Pictures!)
Sponsored by the College Park Neighborhood Association, SIP was held on Sunday, March 16th in Dartmouth Park. You know, most of us live in College Park because we want the Home Town Atmosphere in which to raise our families. Sunday in the Park is exactly what College Park stands for! People greeted old friends and neighbors! The kids rode the ponies or played on the inflatable attractions!
More than 50 exhibitors were be there to welcome neighbors to sample their food or buy their merchandise. Many exhibitors had valuable information for you for free!
Many thanks to Florida Hospital, title sponsor. They presented the Florida Hospital Pavilion, which offered free screenings – such as blood pressure and body fat analysis – and free chair massages as well as information about the hospital's internationally recognized programs.
On stage, we enjoyed only College Park's best talent... performance groups from our own neighborhood schools showcased their talents, and local musicians kept us entertained. Entertainment included: VFW Band; College Park Baptist Church Choir/Ensemble; Dennis, Jeff & Bari Trio; Lake Silver Elementary Chorus, Edgewater High School Jazz Band; Orlando Youth Theatre; Princeton Elementary Chorus; The Pop Shop; Mr. Richard. College Park's own Pat Duggins had the honorable job of M.C. and signed copies of his new book "Final Countdown: NASA and the End of the Space Shuttle Program."
One of the most Prestigious Awards that anyone can win is College Park's Best Brownies contest! Does that show you that we are a HOME TOWN or what???? I bet they don't have THIS award in New York city! Each year contestants vie for the crown, are judged by the luckiest judges, and then their brownies are put up for sale to the public (proceeds benefit the CPNA). The judges this year were: Orange County Commissioner Bill Segal, Orlando City Commissioner Robert Stuart, Pat Duggins, and President of the College Park Neighborhood Association David Rose. I can tell you, it's probably the best job a person could ask for!
The choice was difficult, there were so many gooey, creamy, nutty, chocolatey brownies to choose from, but the Winner of the Best Brownies In College Park was Jane Water! 1st Runner up was her daughter, Mikki Mathews (shown with judges).
If you are not aware of the College Park Neighborhood Association, the event was an opportunity for you to get to know what they do, how they protect our community, and how to become a part of it.
So many thanks to all the volunteers who care enough about their community to give us all a great Sunday to remember!
